Germany asks China, Dalai Lama to act against self-immolations
Oct 21, 2011, 13:22 GMT
Berlin - Germany on Friday called on both the Chinese government and the Dalai Lama to act against a series of self-immolation protests by Buddhist monks and nuns in ethnic Tibetan regions.
A Foreign Ministry spokesman said China should 'shape its policies to reduce the existing tension' and urged the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader to use his influence to stop the young nuns and monks from killing themselves.
At least nine people have burned themselves to death since March in the ethnic Tibetan regions of Sichuan province. A nun became the first female victim this week. Seven of the victims came from the Kirti monastery near the town of Aba, known as Ngaba in Tibetan.
