US, North Korea hold second day of nuclear talks in Geneva

Oct 25, 2011, 9:22 GMT

Geneva - US and North Korean negotiators met in Geneva Tuesday for second day of talks on Pyongyang's nuclear programme, which US officials late Monday said were moving in a 'positive direction.'

The United States has been attempting to get North Korea to return to the so-called six-party talks on Pyongyang's nuclear programme. North Korea in 2008 turned its back on the talks, in which South Korea, Japan, China and Russia participate.

The Geneva round, which follows talks between the US and North Korean sides in New York in July, is aimed at determining whether Pyongyang is ready to comply with the UN framework for the six-party talks.

These include concrete steps by North Korea toward denuclearization as called for under United Nations resolutions.

'We have had a good day of talks. I think we are moving in a positive direction. We have narrowed some differences but we still have differences that we have to resolve,' Stephen Bosworth, the US special envoy for North Korea policy said on Monday.
