LEAD: Japanese emperor hospitalized due to bronchitis, fever
Nov 6, 2011, 12:37 GMT
Tokyo - Japanese Emperor Akihito was hospitalized late Sunday as he was suffering from a severe case of bronchitis and persistent fever, news reports said.
The 77-year-old emperor was admitted to Tokyo University Hospital, Kyodo News reported, citing the Imperial Household Agency.
The emperor, who will turn 78 in December, appeared to be fatigued and had lost some resistance to fight his illness, Kyodo reported.
On Thursday, the emperor developed a fever and his doctor diagnosed him with a cold. He has since refrained from official duties.
The hospitalization prompted Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's cabinet to approve that Crown Prince Naruhito would temporarily take the role of the emperor in state affairs.
In Janurary 2003, the emperor underwent surgery for prostate cancer.
