Myanmar reintegrated into 2018 World Cup qualifying by FIFA
Nov 7, 2011, 12:21 GMT
Zurich - Myanmar can take part in qualifying for the 2018 World Cup after all but will have to play home games outside the country, the ruling body FIFA said on Monday.
FIFA said its Appeal Committee annulled an original exclusion from the preliminaries for the tournament in Russia over fan violence, by partially upholding an appeal by the Asian nation's football federation.
However, FIFA ruled that Myanmar will have to 'play all their home matches in the preliminary competition ... on neutral ground in another country.' FIFA also confirmed a fine of 25,000 Swiss francs (28,000 dollars).
Myanmar was originally banned from 2018 qualifying on September 30 over incidents in a 2014 World Cup qualifying match against Oman on July 28. Fans hurled bottles and stones and other objects onto the field in Yangon which prompted the Japanese referee to abandon the game late in the first half.
Oman were leading 2-0 at the time and were declared 2-0 winners by FIFA to advance into the next round. The result saw Myanmar eliminated from the Asian qualifying campaign for Brazil 2014.
