Japan urges South Korea to cancel concert on disputed isles
Nov 9, 2011, 8:32 GMT
Tokyo - The Japanese government urged South Korea to scrap an orchestra concert on disputed isles in the Sea of Japan, local media reported Wednesday.
The concert organized by a nonpartisan group of South Korean lawmakers is to be held Friday at a dock on the small island known as Takeshima in Japan and Dokdo in South Korea. About 100 people were to attend the event, Japan's daily Sankei reported.
'The government told South Korea about Japan's stance on the islets and called for a cancellation of the concert,' Hiroshi Oka, a foreign ministry official, was quoted telling a meeting of Liberal Democratic Party lawmakers.
The islands controlled by South Korea are also claimed by Japan.
