More than 1,000 couples tie knot on "lucky number" day in Hong Kong
Nov 11, 2011, 10:54 GMT
Hong Kong - More than 1,000 couples tied the knot in Hong Kong Friday, officials said, as superstitious lovers queued up to marry because of the auspicious date of November 11, 2011.
November 11 has since the 1990s been known as 'singles day' and a lucky day to say goodbye to single life and get married in Hong Kong and China because of the repetition of the single digit '1' in the date.
One is considered lucky because it represents single people and so it is believed to be a good day for them to end their days of being single.
Hong Kong's government-run radio station RTHK quoted officials saying 1,017 couples decided to marry Friday in the city of 7.1 million, a record number and almost 10 times the daily average.
The average number of marriages per day in Hong Kong in 2010 was around 140. November 11 has been called 'super singles day' in Hong Kong and China because of the extra digit '1' in the date.
