Seven injured in rebel attack in Philippines
Nov 12, 2011, 4:01 GMT
Manila - Four soldiers, one government militiaman and two civilians were injured in rebel attack in the southern Philippines, a regional military spokesman said Saturday.
Colonel Leopoldo Galon said the guerrillas threw a grenade at a military checkpoint in Panabo City in Davao province, 975 kilometers south of Manila.
The attack occurred amid a deadlock in peace talks between the government and the communist guerrillas.
The rebels insisted on the release of their comrades from jail before the negotiations resume, but the government said there should be no preconditions for the talks.
Communist rebels have been fighting the government since the late 1980s, making the movement one of the longest-running leftist insurgencies in Asia. The guerrillas entered into peace negotiations with the government in 1987.
