Tiger burns bright but has to settle for third in Australia
Nov 13, 2011, 7:26 GMT
Sydney - American golfer Tiger Woods shot a scorching 67 in the final round of the Australian Open on Sunday but finished two strokes off the winning score.
A third-round lapse on the Sydney course a day earlier put him back too far to catch winner Greg Chalmers and fellow Australian John Senden.
Chalmers carded a three-under 69 to hold off the charge from Woods, 34, who is without a victory in the two years since he was last in Australia.
Woods led the tournament after the first two days, but Saturday's 75 left him six shots behind at the start of the final day.
An eagle and a birdie mid-round had him within one shot of Chalmers, who was runner-up to Woods when the American won the 2009 Australian Masters.
The third-place finish put to flight those who criticised captain Fred Couples for including him in the 12-man US team that plays an international team in Melbourne next week for the Presidents Cup.
It was his best finish since being four shots adrift at the US Masters at the Augusta National course in April.
