Vietnamese man jailed for 20 years for setting fire to son
Nov 16, 2011, 8:31 GMT
Hanoi - A court in central Vietnam has sentenced a man to 20 years in prison for setting fire to his 3-year-old son to spite his wife after she asked for a divorce, local media reported Wednesday.
Vu Van Quang, 31, was found guilty of attempted murder by Thanh Hoa People's Court Wednesday morning, online news site VietnamNet reported.
The incident occurred in April after Quang's wife Nguyen Thi Ha, 27, moved in with her mother following violent arguments with her husband over his gambling debts, the report said.
When Ha asked for a divorce, Quang objected. He then took his son to Ha's mother's house, doused him with petrol and set him on fire.
Ha's brother witnessed the scene and quickly plunged the boy into a pond in the garden before taking him to hospital. Quang was arrested shortly afterwards.
The boy suffered severe burns over nearly 40 per cent of his body. He has yet to make a full recovery.
