Philippines vows to treat Arroyo with respect, impartiality
Nov 18, 2011, 9:17 GMT
Manila - The Philippine government on Friday assured former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo that she would be treated with respect and impartiality while facing electoral fraud charges.
Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said police officers would serve an arrest warrant issued by a regional trial court judge against Arroyo at a hospital where the 64-year-old former president was confined.
'We will treat the former president with utmost respect,' she said. 'The police are not going to handcuff her or take her out of the hospital.'
'Rest assured that throughout the judicial process, the government will exercise fairness and impartiality and will uphold every right that Mrs Arroyo as an accused is entitled to under the constitution,' she added.
Arroyo has been confined in hospital since Tuesday when she and her husband were barred from leaving the Philippines for Singapore to seek medical treatment.
