Man charged after setting car alight in New Zealand pedestrian mall
Nov 26, 2011, 6:04 GMT
Wellington - A 40-year-old man was arrested and charged with arson Saturday after setting fire to his car in a pedestrian shopping mall in the New Zealand capital Wellington, police said.
Witnesses said the car exploded and burst into flames after the man, described on the New Zealand Herald website as a farmer from the Bay of Plenty, drove his car into the mall and torched it.
Police detective Michael Priston said the North Island man had appeared in court earlier in the week on two charges of threatening behaviour.
'It is believed that today's actions relate to this same protest activity.'
