Filipino terrorists blow up bridge, commander killed in clash
Dec 3, 2011, 10:01 GMT
Manila - Members of an al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group blew up a bridge in the southern province of Sulu early Saturday, security authorities said.
Meanwhile one of the group's leaders was killed on Friday in a clash with government forces in the nearby province of Basilan, the authorities said.
Aby Sayyaf militants blew up the bridge 'to paralyze our troop's movement in the area,' regional police chief Beinvenido Latag said. It was no longer passable, he said. No one was injured in the attack.
Mohammadan Musallain, a senior Abu Sayyaf leader, was killed in an encounter with soldiers in the village of Cabebeng, regional military spokesman Randolph Cabangbang said.
Troops recovered a hand gun and one grenade from the terrorist after the clash.
Basilan and Sulu are known strongholds of the Abu Sayyaf, an extremist group founded in the 1990s.
The group has been blamed for some of the worst terrorist attacks in the Philippines as well as high-profile kidnappings for ransom involving foreign hostages.
