Chinese official gives unflattering endorsement to Taiwan president
Dec 7, 2011, 9:05 GMT
Taipei - A Chinese official in Shanghai told a group of visiting Taiwanese dignitaries to help Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou overcome his bland personality and win January's election, local media reported Wednesday.
The endorsement was given by Yang Xiaodu, the head of a Communist propaganda department in Shanghai, while he was hosting leaders of Taiwan's hometown associations during their visit to the mainland from November 17 to 21.
He told the grassroots leaders that 'even though Ma has a personality that is as bland as clear water with no fish, we must bear with it and help him with our collective influence,' according to the Apple Daily.
Taiwan's opposition brought the incident to light at a press conference Wednesday.
Ma is widely credited with improving cross-strait relations by signing a free trade pact with China in 2010.
His campaign spokeswoman said Wednesday the president condemns any attempts by China to interfere with Taiwan's election.
