Hong Kong girl dies after 10-storey fall
Dec 8, 2011, 3:26 GMT
Hong Kong - A 4-year-old girl fell 10 storeys to her death after being left home alone in a Hong Kong flat while her mother went shopping, police said Thursday.
The girl was found critically injured outside the apartment by police, after the 41-year-old mother reported her missing late Wednesday. She was declared dead in hospital.
Local news reports said a stool was found pushed up against a window with no safety grille, suggesting she had lost her balance while trying to look out of the window.
Child protection groups have for several years been calling for legislation against children being left alone, after a number of cases of children falling from their deaths from high-rise homes.
Currently there is no specific legislation which makes leaving children alone a crime, but carers and parents can be prosecuted for neglect.
In June, a 10-year-old boy fell seven floors to his death and in August 2010 a 6-year-old girl died after falling 37 floors. Both were home alone.
