US to discuss resuming food aid to North Korea
Dec 14, 2011, 20:38 GMT
Washington - A US envoy will meet with North Korean leaders in Beijing Thursday to discuss the possible resumption of food aid, the State Department said.
Robert King, special envoy on North Korean human rights issues, will hold talks about whether the US will provide nutritional assistance to North Korea with Ri Gun, who heads that country's North American affairs division, and other officials, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters Wednesday.
Nuland said the US needs to assess not only the need for assistance, but also monitoring systems to make sure the aid makes it to those in need. The US was also looking into other types of nutritional assistance, such as vitamin supplements and high-energy biscuits, that would not be as likely to be diverted as other types of food.
The United Nations said last month that an estimated 6 million of the country's 24 million people are in severe need of food aid.
