Philippines announces Christmas ceasefire against rebels
Dec 15, 2011, 6:47 GMT
Manila - The Philippine military will halt offensives against communist rebels during the Christmas and New Year holidays, President Benigno Aquino III said Thursday.
Aquino said he had approved the ceasefire from Friday until January 2.
'We hope that all groups will refrain from actions that will disturb our people's celebration of this holiday season,' said Teresita Deles, presidential adviser on the peace process.
Communist rebels have been fighting the Philippine government since the late 1960s in one of the longest-running leftist insurgencies in Asia.
