Slow start for history-making golfer Luke Donald in Australia
Dec 15, 2011, 6:53 GMT
Sydney - An Englishman was atop the leader board Thursday after the first round of the Australian Masters at Melbourne's Victoria Golf Club.
But it was not all-conquering Luke Donald who led with a six-under-the-card 65 but compatriot Ian Poulter.
World No 1 Donald, who last week became the first male golfer to post the top earnings on both sides of the Atlantic, entered the clubhouse down the list at two-under.
Defending champion Stuart Appleby was one shot behind Donald and fellow Australia Geoff Ogilvy square with the card.
Donald, 34, is in Australia as a professional for the first time.
'I expect myself to do well as well,' he said before the start of the first day's play.
He might yet have to make do with the handsome appearance fee rather than the trophy.
