Thai man gets 18 months for stealing shoes during floods
Dec 15, 2011, 10:22 GMT
Bangkok - A Thai court on Thursday sentenced a 52-year-old man to 18 months in jail for stealing 20 pairs of shoes from a policeman's flooded flat last month, radio reports said.
Bangkok Criminal Court initially sentenced Suphatpong Pothisakha to three years for stealing the shoes worth 6,000 baht (200 dollars) but cut the sentence by half when the man pleaded guilty.
Suphatpong entered the policeman's deserted flat in Bangkhen on the night of November 8, northern Bangkok, where he spotted the shoes on a shelf above the floodwaters and stole them.
He was arrested the following day.
Many of Bangkok's suburbs were flooded for much of October and November, forcing thousands to flee their homes, with many falling prey to burglaries.
