Jakarta - More than 200 people were believed missing after a boat carrying Australia-bound migrants capsized off Indonesia's Java island, a rescue official said Sunday.
At least 33 people were rescued after the accident off Prigi in East Java province on Saturday, said Iwan Rosadi, a search and rescue official in the provincial capital Surabaya.
About 250 people, including undocumented migrants from Afghanistan, were believed to have been on board the boat, he said.
Transportation Ministry spokesman Bambang Ervan said was working to verify the information.
'Boats carrying illegal migrants are usually not registered with authorities and most of the time are overloaded,' he said.
