Thais wish for political reconciliation in New Year
Jan 1, 2012, 4:51 GMT
Bangkok - The majority of Thais want peace and political reconciliation in the new year, an opinion poll said Sunday.
The Abac survey of 2,149 people conducted December 20-31 showed that 82.9 per cent said they desired reconciliation most of all.
Thailand has suffered political unrest over the past six years. Demonstrations in Bangkok led to a coup in 2006 and deadly street battles during 2008-10, leaving the populace deeply divided.
The poll ranked Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra as the most popular member of the ruling coalition.
Yingluck became the country's first female premier following the victory of her Pheu Thai party in the July 3 general election.
Former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, leader of the Democrat Party, was ranked the most popular opposition politician.
