North Korean accused by South of posing as defector to spy
Jan 5, 2012, 5:31 GMT
Seoul - A North Korean was indicted Thursday and accused of impersonating a defector to spy on South Korea, a news agency reported.
The suspect, 47, was accused of being a former member of North Korean military intelligence who entered South Korea in June after using a broker to cross North Korea's northern border into China and travel via Thailand to the South with 14 defectors, the Yonhap News Agency said, citing prosecutors.
The accused said under questioning by prosecutors that the spy agency asked him to defect and spy on the South after he was found guilty of drug smuggling and human trafficking while working for the agency and sentenced to 99 months, Yonhap reported. He said he accepted the mission, it said.
Prosecutors told Yonhap that they believed he had yet to begin any spying for the North before his arrest.
