US calls for cooperation with Asia allies to deal with North Korea
Jan 6, 2012, 13:11 GMT
Tokyo - A senior US diplomat said on Friday it was important that the United States, Japan and South Korea cooperate to deal with North Korea's power transition following the death of Kim Jong Il.
Kurt Campbell, assistant secretary of state for East Asia and the Pacific, who is the highest-level US diplomat to visit the region since the death of the North Korean leader last month, held talks with Japanese deputy foreign minister Tsuyoshi Yamaguchi.
Campbell told reporters he discussed 'the need for close coordination' among the three countries and their mutual desire 'to see peace and stability' on the peninsula by sharing necessary information with key regional players like China, Kyodo News said.
Campbell arrived from Seoul for a two-day visit to Japan -- the last leg of a three-stop tour that started in Beijing earlier this week.
Asked about rumours than an explosion had occurred at the Yongbyon nuclear facility in North Korea, Campbell said he had no knowledge of any blast, Kyodo reported.
