Pennetta joins injury list after Auckland retirement
Jan 8, 2012, 6:58 GMT
Auckland - Italian Flavia Pennetta was Sunday dealing with a back problem which forced her to quit the final at the ASB Classic as China's Zheng Jie posted a 2-6, 6-3, 2-0 title win.
The number 48 earned his fourth career ATP title after reaching her last success in Stockholm six years ago.
Number 20 Pennetta has pulled out of the singles at the Sydney event beginning on Monday but is hopefully of playing the doubles to fine-tune for the Australian Open starting on January 16.
Pennetta and Argentine Gisela Dulko won the Australian open women's doubles in 2011 and are hoping the Italian can be fit for a title defence.
The 29-year-old Italian missed the chance for a 10th WTA title after ending her effort early after back pain in the first set, particularly on serve.
'I hope it's not that big an injury, I'll still go to Sydney. I might take some treatment there, and I'll decide later on the doubles.'
