Endangered tiger dies of injuries in Indonesia
Jan 15, 2012, 5:13 GMT
Jakarta - An endangered Sumatran tiger that was rescued with multiple spear wounds in Indonesia has died from its injuries, an official said Sunday.
The tiger died Saturday at the Indonesian Safari Park in the western Java city of Bogor, after being flown from Bengkulu on Sumatra island for treatment, park spokesman Julius Suprihardo said.
'His injuries were too severe and he was already very weak when he arrived here,' he said.
The 5-year-old tiger was found on January 9 in a wire trap with nine wounds from spears, officials said.
There are fewer than 400 Sumatran tigers in the wild and their survival is threatened by deforestation and poaching, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature.
