Prosecutors vow to prove top judge unfit for office
Jan 16, 2012, 8:00 GMT
Manila - Philippine lawmakers on Monday vowed to prove that the country's top judge was unfit to remain in office for allegedly selling the Supreme Court's independence and honour.
At the start of the first-ever impeachment trial of a Supreme Court chief justice, the prosecution panel from the House of Representatives said it was not after the entire high tribunal.
'We are here because one man, Chief Justice Renato Corona, has bartered away for a pot of porridge the effectiveness, independence and honour of the Supreme Court,' said Congressman Niel Tupas, the chief of the panel.
He said prosecutors would show that 'by his misdeeds, (Corona) is unfit to remain chief justice.'
