Jan 18, 2012, 8:46 GMT
Sydney - A surfer whose leg was bitten by a shark on Australia's east coast Wednesday is in a stable condition in hospital in Newcastle, 163 kilometres north of Sydney.
An ambulance officer said the 44-year-old man suffered deep cuts to his leg in the attack at Redhead Beach.
It was the second shark attack in as many weeks near Sydney. A surfer was bitten on his arm at North Avoca beach January 4.
An average of one person a year is killed by a shark in Australia.
