Prosecution appeals acquittal of Anwar Ibrahim in sodomy case
Jan 20, 2012, 11:23 GMT
Kuala Lumpur - Government prosecutors on Friday filed an appeal against the acquittal of Malaysia's top opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim on the charge of sodomy.
The appeal papers were filed at the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Friday afternoon, according to a court official.
Anwar, 64, was acquitted on January 9, after the court said there was not enough evidence to convict him of the crime that carries a maximum penalty of up to 20 years imprisonment.
The case was filed on August 8, 2008 by the then 24-year-old former aide Saiful Bukhari Azlan, who accused Anwar of sodomizing him in a condominium in the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur.
