Two die in Fiji floods
Jan 23, 2012, 23:05 GMT
Wellington - Two farmers drowned trying to rescue stock in Fiji after torrential rains flooded much of the main island Viti Levu, according to reports from the capital Suva on Tuesday.
The town of Nadi, near the country's international airport, was under 5 feet (1.5 metres) of water and closed to traffic, Police commander Jope Ralulu told the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation.
It reported that soldiers rescued a group of tourists trapped by rising flood waters in Nadi on Monday night and took them to the airport.
Many houses in low-lying villages were reported to be flooded and all schools in the western part of the island were closed.
