Jan 28, 2012, 3:00 GMT
Bangkok - Thailand's police chief has floated the idea of building an island prison for drug inmates in order to prevent them from continuing their trade behind bars, media reports said Saturday.
Priewpan Damapong mooted the proposal after revealing that the alleged mastermind behind a recent large drug haul was an inmate at the maximum security Bang Kwang Prison, the Bangkok Post reported.
Priewpan said he was discussing setting up an island prison equipped with a mobile phone signal-blocking system.
More than 60 per cent of Thailand's prison inmates are serving sentences for drug convictions. Some well-known kingpins have ben known to continue their trade behind bars via smuggled mobile phones.
'The feasibility of this project needs much discussion,' Priewpan said of his island proposal.
