Fiji floods claim seventh victim
Feb 1, 2012, 1:08 GMT
Wellington - A 26-year-old man died when he was trapped by debris in a swollen river, the seventh victim of widespread flooding over the last week in Fiji, according to reports Wednesday from the capital, Suva.
The man was bathing in the river, ignoring appeals by authorities urging people to stay out of flood-affected waters, the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation reported.
Another tropical depression is 600 kilometres west of Nadi, site of Fiji's international airport, and could form into a tropical cyclone in the next 12 to 24 hours, senior meteorologist Amit Singh told the FijiLive news website.
He said the weather system would bring heavy rain, and another flood warning has been issued for the entire Fiji group.
A family of four, including two young girls, ages 1 and 3, were buried alive last week when a landslide engulfed their house after days of torrential rains.
Earlier, two farmers drowned as they tried to rescue their stock from floodwaters.
