Merkel heads for China with business delegation
Feb 1, 2012, 16:48 GMT
Berlin - German Chancellor Angela Merkel, accompanied by a business delegation, departed Wednesday from Berlin for a three-day visit to China, where she is expected to urge Chinese investment in the eurozone and raise human-rights issues.
Merkel was to hold talks with Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao in Beijing on Thursday and meet business leaders in Guangzhou on Friday before flying home on Saturday.
According to aides, while in China she is also likely to appeal to Beijing not to make up any shortages in oil exports as a result of a European Union embargo by increasing its imports. The visit is her fifth to China in the seven years she has been Germany's chancellor.
