Colombo - The government of the Maldives was the target of an attempted coup by mutinying police and opposition supporters on Tuesday, a governmeent spokesman said.
Police joined opposition demonstrators and took over the state broadcaster, the independent Minivan News website reported.
Opposition supporters have called for the overthrow of the government which they accuse of undermining democracy.
Protests have escalated in the South Asian country since the army last month arrested a senior judge accused of political bias and corruption.
President Mohamed Nasheed was under the protection of the military in the capital Male, the report said. His office denied reports he had resigned.
The President's Office said that the government was working to ensure peace and stability and called on the population to remain calm.
