Taiwan's most successful baseball coach investigated for gambling
Feb 16, 2012, 8:53 GMT
Taipei - The manager of Taiwan's Uni-President Lions baseball team was detained Thursday on suspicion of gambling on professional baseball games.
Under Lu Wen-sheng, Taiwan's most successful baseball coach, the Uni-President Lions have won four championships in the past five years in Taiwan's Chinese Professional Baseball League.
But now his reputation has been tainted as police investigate whether Lu was involved in a gambling syndicate while serving as manager.
Prosecutors said they suspected Lu of passing insider information on his team - including his planned starting line-up, player substitution plans and detailed injury reports - to a gambling syndicate before each game through his wife, Hsieh Fu-yu.
They alleged the syndicate made huge profits on the information and are investigating whether the couple profited.
The Uni-President Lions said Thursday that they have suspended Lu, who maintained his innocence to local media.
Baseball is Taiwan's most popular sport, but attendance at professional games has dwindled since the league experienced four game-fixing scandals in the past 15 years.
