Tibetans protest outside Chinese embassy in New Delhi
Feb 16, 2012, 11:37 GMT
New Delhi - Tibetan exiles were detained by police Thursday during a protest outside the Chinese embassy in New Delhi, officials said.
Protesters waved Tibetan flags and planned to storm the complex but were blocked by police, the officials said.
'At least 35 Tibetans were detained in the protests today,' a police officer said on the condition of anonymity. 'No one was injured.'
Tibetan exiles said the protest was against the 'illegal Chinese occupation and continued religious and cultural repression in Tibet.'
At least 20 Tibetans have set fire to themselves in China in the past 13 months, most of them in the restive Aba area.
Lobsang Sangay, the head of the India-based Tibetan government-in-exile said Wednesday that it was 'critical' for the international community to intervene immediately to show support for Tibet and the Tibetan people.
