Hong Kong - A model aircraft fan who was crippled when he was hit by a remote-controlled helicopter in Hong Kong has won a 1-million-US-dollar payout, a news report said Friday.
Lo Kwok-wah, 49, was in a coma for months and is confined to a wheelchair after being hit on the head by the spinning rotor of a 1.5-metre-long model helicopter in 2008.
The accident happened as Lo was watching Chan Man-kin, 43, a baker, fly the helicopter at a meeting place for model aircraft enthusiasts, the South China Morning Post reported.
After a long legal battle, Hong Kong's High Court Thursday awarded Lo 8 million Hong Kong dollars (1.03 million US dollars) compensation for his injuries which include brain damage.
Father-of-two Lo, a bus company operations manager, had warned Chan to be more careful before Chan lost control of the helicopter. He was forced to give up work because of his injuries.
In 2009, Chan was fined the equivalent of 644 US dollars after being convicted of recklessly or negligently causing an aircraft to endanger a person or property.
