Taipei - Taiwan airports tightened security checks on Britain and United States-bound passengers Thursday after Britain foiled a plot to bomb flights from London to the US.
All airlines began to ban Britain and US-bound passengers from taking large carry-on luggage on board. Liquids like hair gel, suntan lotion, perfume, shampoo, toothpaste and beverages also had to be checked in and not carried on board.
However, passengers were allowed to take on board baby formula, breast milk or children's juice, prescription medicines bearing a name that matches the ticket, insulin and other essential non- prescription medicine after approval by security staff.
All footwear must be x-ray screened, except for people with disabilities, in which case the footwear must be subject to special screening.
Several airlines issued warnings about the security checks on their website.
Taiwan's EVA Air and Singapore Airlines printed the complete text of the order by the US Department of Homeland Security and Transportation Security Administration.
According to the Broadcasting Corp of China (BCC), Taiwan airports are keeping a close eye on passengers arriving from Bangkok, a transit point for passengers originating from Europe.
'Airport and airline authorities are still discussing how to apply the ban to flight crew who usually enjoy the privilege of carrying their kits on board, which hold personal belongings and work manuals,' BCC reported.© 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
