Taiwan's China Airlines plans to buy 10 long-haul passenger jets
Nov 25, 2006, 2:13 GMT
Taipei - Taiwan's China Airlines (CAL) plans to buy 10 long-range passenger jets to replace its ageing fleet of Boeing 747-400s and Airbus A340s, a newspaper said on Saturday.
The Commercial Times quoted CAL President Chao Kuo-shuai as saying that CAL plans to place the orders - worth between two to three billion US dollars - in the first half of 2007.
'The jets must be fuel-efficient, environmental-friendly and can carry more passengers. Boeing 747-8, Boeing 747-9 and Airbus A350XWB are under consideration,' he said.
The paper said as CAL is unlikely to split the orders between Boeing and Airbus. Both companies are vying for the orders.
According to the Commercial Times, CAL was planning to buy 10 long-range passenger jets early this year, but shelved the plan due to soaring fuel price and lower-than-expected profits.
CAL is Taiwan's largest airline. Its long-haul fleet consists of 10 Boeing 747-400 and seven A340s, some of which will be 10 years old by 2010, the time when delivery of the 10 new planes will begin.
