Germany's Cebit computer fair posts increased turnover

Hanover, Germany - The Cebit computer fair currently running in the German city of Hanover has booked around 5 billion euros (6.5 billion dollars) in new orders, Heinz-Paul Bonn, vice-president of the BITKOM association of computer-related companies, said. Speaking at the half-way point in the fair that opened its doors on Thursday, Bonn said the figure was considerably higher than at the same point last year. Exhibitors at the fair, the largest of its kind in the world, attributed the boom to favourable economic conditions. The number of visitors at the half-way mark has risen by 10 per cent compared with last year to well over 200,000. Some 6,100 exhibitors from more than 70 countries are at the fair, which ends on Wednesday. The organizers plan to cut back the show next year to make it more accessible to visitors, reducing the number of days to six. Hotels in the area have agreed to cut their rates after complaints from exhibitors that rates were raised sharply during the fair. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
