Taiwan's Hon Hai to open industrial parks in Vietnam

Mar 31, 2007, 0:27 GMT

Taipei - Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Co will open an industrial park in Vietnam in May to make digital cameras and other information technology (IT) products, a newspaper said on Saturday.

Hon Hai President Terry Gou will open the industrial park in Bac Ninh Province in North Vietnam on May 1st. Hon Hai also plans to build another industrial zone in the nearby Bac Giang Province, the Economic Daily News (EDN) quoted Taiwan's trade representative to Vietnam Huang Nan-hui as saying.

The two industrial parks will occupy a total of 300 hectares and involve an investment of five billion US dollars, Huang said.

Since December 2006, Gou has made two inspection trips to Vietnam and met with Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet, EDN said.

Hon Hai is also discussing joint-venture with Vietnam's City Group, EDN said. The cooperation will cover urban development, commercial centres, entertainment facilities, schools and hospitals.

Hon Hai hopes to make Vietnam Hong Hai's third-largest overseas production base after China and India, the paper said.

At Hon Hai's year-end party on February 6, Gou said that Vietnam would be Hon Hai's focus in 2007. He planned to build five industrial zones in Vietnam in 2007 and create 30,000 jobs. Hon Hai's investment in Vietnam would be centred around Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Hon Hai is a world leader in mobile phones, PCs, notebook computers, motherboards and game consoles. Hong Kong-listed Foxconn is the registered trade name for Hon Hai.

Hon Hai also has production bases in Finland, Hungary and Mexico.
