Danish brewer Carlsberg to expand in India

Copenhagen - Danish brewer Carlsberg said Monday it has bought a brewery in India as part of expansion plans.
The brewery was located in the state of Himachal Pradesh, some 280 kilometres north of New Delhi.
The 10-year-old plant is well-located to serve important markets in northern India, Carlsberg said.
Jesper Madsen, senior vice president at Carlsberg in charge of Asia, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa that the group had agreed with the local Indian group not to disclose the value of the deal.
The brewery would also offer several of the Carlsberg group's current brands, he added.
In addition, Carlsberg is building a brewery in the state of Rajasthan, south-west of New Delhi that was due to be completed in the beginning of 2008.
Both plants would be managed by Carlsberg's joint venture South Asia Breweries that was formed in November 2006.
Carlsberg holds 45 per cent of South Asia Breweries and the Industrialization Fund for Developing Countries holds 10 per cent. The remaining 45 per cent is owned by a group of investors, including Carlsberg's partner in Sri Lanka, The Lion Brewery Ceylon Ltd.
