Three million people unemployed in Iran

Tehran - There are three million unemployed people in Iran, the head of Iran's statistical organization announced Tuesday.
Mohammed Madad was quoted as saying by news agency Fars that according to latest survey, unemployment had doubled in the last ten years.
One of the main promises by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was creating jobs but still unemployment, especially among the youth, remains a major problem in Iran.
Madad further said that the total population of Iran stood at 70,472,846, including more than 13 million in Tehran, the country's largest city.
Tehran's population before the 1979 Islamic revolution stood at about 3.5 million.
Out of the total population, more than 68 per cent live in urban and 32 per cent in rural areas. Women meanwhile make up 49 per cent of the populace.
The 1980-1988 war against Iraq and the devastation of border areas in the west and south-west of Iran led to the migration of many border residents to Teheran, which is considered as the main reason for the population boom.
Unemployment, lack of accommodation and drastic traffic problems are three of the main problems caused by overpopulation in the capital.
