VW to shift Golf production from South Africa to Germany

Wolfsburg, Germany - Volkswagen plans to shift production of its right-hand drive Golf model for the Asia-Pacific region from South Africa to Germany, company sources said Friday.
They said production would be moved from Uitenhage to VW's main manufacturing plant at Wolfsburg from the middle of 2008.
The sources said the company would make a final decision once it had decided on alternative production for Uitenhage.
Volkswagen earlier transferred Golf assembly from its plant in Brussels to Germany.
Last month, Volkswagen announced that pre-tax profits for the first six months quadrupled as it delivered a record 3.1 million vehicles to customers.
Europe's largest carmaker predicted its sales for the full year at 'well above 6 million vehicles,' compared with 5.7 million in 2006, with China, South America and Eastern Europe driving the rise.
