German chipmaker claims savings on LCD power supplies
Sep 4, 2007, 14:30 GMT
Neubiberg, Germany - German computer chip maker Infineon claimed Tuesday it could achieve significant energy savings in the power supply units of flat-panel televisions.
The screens have come under fire because they use far more power, sometimes more than 300 watts, compared to traditional televisions which manage on 50 to 70 watts.
Andreas Urschitz, who heads the Infineon unit making semiconductor controllers for power supply units, said at the company offices in Neubiberg that smart chips could cut power use.
Many power supply units wasted 8 per cent of the energy used in the appliance. The units convert alternating current to direct current and keep the voltage constant.
Urschitz said an Infineon chip could cut the waste by as much as a quarter.
'Add it up for a whole country and it's a huge amount of power,' he said, adding that 42-inch LCD flat panels for a German consumer electronics brand had been fitted with the chips and now had a power uptake of just 150 to 165 watts.
The flat panels have been the key product on show at the IFA electronics show in Berlin ending Wednesday. Their high power consumption has led to criticism from environmentalists.
