Gazprom warns it may suspend deliveries of gas to Ukraine
Oct 2, 2007, 16:12 GMT
Moscow - Gazprom Tuesday warned it may suspend gas deliveries to Ukraine if the country's debts are not settled in October.
'Russia fully complies with our contract, while the Ukrainian gas debt has topped 1.3 billion dollars,' Gazprom spokesman Sergey Kupryanov told Interfax news agency.
'Bearing in mind the approaching winter season and higher demand for gas, as well as the Ukrainian recurring failures to fulfil gas contracts, Gazprom will have to reduce gas deliveries to Ukraine if the debt is not settled in October,' he said.
Russian ambassador to Ukraine Viktor Chernomudrin said last week that higher gas prices were clearly to be expected if pro-Western reformer Yulia Tymoshenko became prime minister.
'Everything depends on what new government will come to power and how it will manage these negotiations,' Chernomudrin said.
A coalition of pro-Western political parties was on the verge of taking control of Ukraine's parliament as the votes were counted Tuesday, with the pro-Russian Regions Ukraine party narrowly behind.
