Britain faces wave of rolling postal strikes
Oct 9, 2007, 6:56 GMT
London - Britain was Tuesday faced with a wave of rolling postal strikes after talks between management and postal workers unions over pay, pensions and job security failed, unions said.
With a second 48-hour strike by up to 100,000 postal delivery workers still under way Tuesday, more than 100 million items are stuck in the pipeline and the costs of the strike action are estimated at 260 million pounds (520 million dollars).
The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has now threatened a series of rolling strikes, due to start next Monday, and continuing until the dispute is resolved.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has called on postal workers to return to work immediately.
The dispute is about job security and pensions in view of large- scale modernization plans of the postal service Royal Mail, which has not been privatized.
