Egyptian tax collectors end strike outside cabinet headquarters

Cairo - Egyptian tax collectors ended their 11-day strike after government officials reached a compromise with the workers' representatives, reports said Friday. On December 2, thousands of tax workers began an open strike outside the cabinet's headquarters in downtown Cairo, calling for better wages and working conditions. The minister of finance at first did not respond to their demands. However, the strike went on, attracting the attention of media, public opinion and human rights activists. On Thursday, a delegation of strikers met government officials who agreed to pay them bonuses and cancel penalties against some of them, Hisham Mubarak law centre, a human rights organization, said in a statement. The employees said they would strike again on January 9, 2008 should the government not fulfil its promises. The state employees, who are all members of the property tax department, have been picketing for better conditions since October when they initially organized a mass strike of around 55,000 tax workers. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
