Warsaw - A dispute between doctors and hospital directors in northern Poland has led to the evacuation of pregnant women from the hospital, Polish television station TVN 24 reported Thursday.
Two expectant mothers were taken from the hospital in Koscierzyna to a hospital in a neighbouring city while four others were allowed to go home.
The hospital's maternity ward has been closed because of a pay dispute with doctors.
Since the start of the year an EU regulation has enforced a 48- hour week for Poland's doctors. This has led to many bottlenecks in the health service.
EU law does, however, admit the possibility of an extension of the working week to 72 hours, but doctors have made pay demands for this which hospitals are refusing to meet.
Poland's nurses are also threatening to strike on January 21.
The government wants to defuse the crisis by increasing the number of people with private health insurance.
