Soaring petrol price pushes passengers to German railways
May 28, 2008, 9:52 GMT
Berlin - This year's surge in world oil prices has boosted long-distance passenger numbers on the German railways by 3.1 per cent, figures released Wednesday in Berlin show.
The year-on-year data from Deutsche Bahn for the first four months of the year also showed a jump of 3.6 per cent in the company's passenger numbers on its 'S-Bahn' urban networks in Berlin and Hamburg, whereas other local services had only flat growth.
A spokesman said more motorists were turning to trains for long-distance trips and commuting because of the high cost of motor fuel.
