Romania halts stock trading after shares plunge (Roundup)
Oct 8, 2008, 15:04 GMT
Bucharest - The Bucharest stock exchange ended Wednesday's session early after most blue-chip shares fell by more than 12 per cent during the first hour of trading.
Trading was to resume Thursday, the Romanian exchange's operators said.
In a statement, stock exchange officials blamed the 'extremely high volatility' on uncertainty in major European markets.
Romanian authorities 'have given assurances that the local financial system remains solid and there are no grounds for deep concern,' the statement said.
