Ban Ki-moon worried over impact of financial crisis on UN goals

Manila - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said Wednesday the worsening financial crisis could seriously impact on the world body's vital goals and programmes. Ban expressed concern that the implementation of key programmes such as the Millennium Development Goals might be hampered as developed and developing countries battle the global crisis. 'I'm deeply concerned about the possible impact (of) this financial crisis (on) the overall United Nations goals and agenda,' Ban told a press briefing after addressing the 2nd Global Forum on Migration and Development in Manila. Ban said he hoped that developed and developing countries would honour their commitments to implement and attain key UN goals aimed at addressing issues such as human development, food crisis and climate change. He said he has been urging leaders of developing countries not to lose their political will to support the development goals and other vital UN programmes. Ban also called on developed countries to honour their commitments to help poor and developing nations. 'I sincerely hope that the leaders will implement and keep their promises,' he said.
